JAMMU, Feb 14: Noted media professional cum educator Ashok Ogra has been conferred with the distinguished KECSS Award 2023 for outstanding contribution in the field of Media & Education by Delhi based Kashmir Educational, Cultural & Scientific Society (KECSS) — a reputed organization founded by distinguished professionals in diverse fields.
On receiving the award, Ogra dedicated it to readers who enjoy his features published in Daily Excelsior and elsewhere including on various social media platforms. He said that to share the award with other community members who too have distinguished themselves in various fields is indeed a matter of privilege and joy.
Ogra started his career as a print journalist in 1974, writing articles on varied subjects including politics and economics for leading publications including Illustrated Weekly, Indian Express, Economic & Political Weekly, the prestigious Far Eastern Economic Review (Hong Kong), Daily Excelsior etc.
During 1974-76, he also worked as a ‘Roving Correspondent’ for two important weeklies ‘Socialist India’ edited by Narashima Rao and ‘Young Indian’, edited by Chandra Shekhar – both of whom later became Prime Ministers. He later joined The Tribune in late 1976.
Ogra has worked in Doordarshan as a Producer (news and current affairs). He became Director Doordarshan at a fairly young age in 1987- topping the UPSC list. However, he left the Government service in 1995 to launch Discovery Channel where he worked as vice president for entire SAARAC Region. As part of Discovery Channel bouquet, he launched Animal Planet channel in 1998.
He has been associated with The Business School, Jammu University and has been an executive member of Central University, Jammu. He has also served two terms as member of the Advisory Board on Commonwealth Educational Media Centre for Asia.
Currently, he works as Advisor (Mass Communication) with the reputed Apeejay Education Society.
