JAMMU, Jan 19: The Income Tax Department has issued over 54,000 non-compliance notices in Jammu and Kashmir to the people who have not filed their income tax returns.
This was disclosed by Principal Commissioner of Income Tax, J&K, Sangeeta Gupta during an interaction programme organized by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry this evening. The programme was also attended by the members of Federation of Industries and Bari Brahmana Industries Association (BBIA).
“The Income Tax Department has issued over 54,000 non- compliance notices to people who have failed to file their income tax returns for the past several assessment years,” Principal Commissioner of Income Tax Sangeeta Gupta said, adding “this step of the department has yielded positive results and over 50% people have responded to the notices by way of filing returns, which led to increase in the tax collection”.
“Whosoever falls in the tax bracket but have not filed their tax returns have been served notices. It has nothing to do with their profession or social or religious affiliation,” she said, adding “it is a matter of concern for the department that number of PAN card holders is much more than those filing returns and steps taken to fill this gap are yielding positive results”.
Stating that focus of the department was on widening of the tax base, she said, “to achieve this objective all steps including generating awareness and issuing notices are being initiated”, adding “we don’t want to create any problem for the people but only want them to disclose their exact income and pay tax accordingly so as to play role in development of the country”.
In response to a question from some media persons on the occasion, she said, “there is a separate wing in the department which keeps track of all the suspected hawala transactions, so that all type of funding used for anti-national activities are checked”.
Earlier, President of Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Rakesh Gupta thanked the Income Tax Department for cooperating with the trading fraternity and assured full cooperation from the Chamber to the department in all its endeavors to widen the tax base.
“We want the department to take Chamber into confidence before conducting any survey or raid and I assure that Chamber will make all out efforts to ensure compliance to the provisions of the Income Tax Department”, he said, adding “the recent few surveys were conducted by the department only due to non-adherence to the notices”.
The function was also attended by all the office bearers of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Chairman of Federation of Industries, Rajesh Jain and representatives of the Bari Brahmana Industries Association.
