NIT Srinagar opens Inter-NIT Cricket tournament

SRINAGAR, July 3: The National Institute of Technology (NIT) Srinagar today inaugurated the All-India Inter-NIT Faculty & Staff Cricket Tournament (Men) 2026, bringing together 24 teams from NITs across the country for a five-day championship aimed at promoting sportsmanship, teamwork and institutional camaraderie.

The tournament, being hosted by NIT Srinagar for the first time, will be held from July 4 to 8, with matches scheduled at eight venues across Srinagar. The inaugural ceremony at the institute's Common Hall began with the National Anthem and National Song.

In-charge Director Prof. Roohie Naaz Mir formally declared the tournament open, describing it as a celebration of national integration, friendship and healthy competition. She said the event reflects NIT Srinagar's commitment to holistic development by encouraging excellence in both academics and sports.

Director Prof. Binod Kumar Kanaujia, in his message, said sports strengthen institutional bonds and create lasting relationships among participants from diverse regions. He expressed hope that teams would enjoy both the competition and Kashmir's hospitality.

Registrar Prof. Atikur Rehman highlighted the role of sports in fostering leadership, discipline and collaboration, while Dean Faculty Welfare Prof. Manzoor Ahmad Ahanger stressed the importance of physical activity for faculty and staff well-being.

Earlier, Dr Manoj Kumar, Faculty In-Charge of the Sports Activity Centre, welcomed the participants and dignitaries. A felicitation ceremony honoured representatives from participating institutes.

A managers' meeting was also held to finalise fixtures, match schedules and team groupings, ensuring the smooth conduct of the championship, which promises competitive cricket and stronger inter-institutional ties.
