JAMMU, Apr 28: Continuing with its outreach initiatives, SMVD Narayana Superspeciality Hospital (SMVDNSH), Kakryal, performed successful Cochlear Implant surgeries on three congenitally deaf children.
A Cochlear Implant is a small, complex electronic device that helps provide a sense of sound to a person who is profoundly deaf or severely hard-of-hearing. This unique surgery is performed only in a few selected hospitals in the country.
Despite the advantage of transforming the lives of children who are not able to hear and speak from their birth, most of the children suffering from such a disability, are not able to undergo surgery due to lack of awareness and on account of the fact that the procedure costs about Rs 7-8 lakh.
The 3 children – Ayan Rashid, Rutba Tabassum and Daneshwar Singh – belong to economically weak households and their parents had lost all hopes, as they were not able to afford this procedure due to its very high cost.
Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board has provided the implants free of cost and also provided free rehabilitation treatment to these three children under its Arogaya Yojna. The surgeries were performed by the Hospital’s surgical team led by Padmashree Dr JM Hans (Delhi) and Dr Rohan Gupta, Consultant, ENT in the Superspeciality Hospital, Kakryal.
“The surgery was carried out successfully, free from any complications and the children were discharged on the fifth post-operation day”, informed Dr Rohan Gupta.
Earlier, in order to spread awareness amongst the people, particularly amongst the parents of such children who have deficiency in hearing, an orientation programme was organized by Dr Rohan Gupta at SMVDNSH, Kakryal. He briefed them about the procedure as well as the ways in which parents could timely assess if their children are suffering from this deficiency.
This orientation programme was also attended by Dr (Brig) Man Mohan Harjai (Chief Administrative Officer-SMVDNSH) and Navneet Bali (Director- Northern Region, Narayana Health) along with other senior functionaries and staff of SMVDNSH.
