Mulayam Singh dies at 82

GURUGRAM, Oct 10: Samajwadi Party supremo and three-time Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav, who was born in a farming family and went on to spawn the State’s most prominent political clan, died today after prolonged illness. He was 82.
The former Defence Minister was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit of the Medanta Hospital here on October 2.
“My respected father and ‘netaji’ to all is no more,” his son Akhilesh Yadav said in a tweet in Hindi.
The body is being taken to his native Saifai in Uttar Pradesh’s Etawah district where the cremation will take place at 3 pm on Tuesday.
President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi were among a host of leaders who condoled the death of the veteran leader.
Murmu said the achievements of Yadav, who came from an ordinary environment, were extraordinary
“‘Dharti Putra’ Mulayam ji was a veteran leader and was connected with the land. He was respected by people of all parties. My deepest condolences to his family members and supporters!” Murmu tweeted in Hindi
The Prime Minister said Yadav served people diligently and devoted his life towards popularising ideals of Jayaprakash Narayan and Ram Manohar Lohia.
Soon after the news of his demise, Union Home Minister Amit Shah drove to the hospital to share the family’s grief.
The Home Minister met Mulayam Singh Yadav’s family members, including son and former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, at the hospital and expressed his condolences.
Meanwhile, Lieutenant Governor, Manoj Sinha has expressed grief over the sad demise of former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh Mulayam Singh Yadav.
In a condolence message, the Lt Governor said, “The demise of former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh Mulayam Singh Yadav is an irreparable loss to Indian politics. My heartfelt tribute to the veteran politician. I pray for peace to the departed soul and strength to the bereaved family members and admirers”.
