Srinagar, June 14: Inspector General of Police Kashmir Vijay Kumar today said that a major threat to Amarnath yatra was averted by the killing of two militants last night in Srinagar as they were tasked to carry out attacks on the yatra.

A gun battle broke out at Mishipora area of South Kashmir’s Kulgam district today during a search operation against a group of hiding militants.
An official said that based on specific input about presence of 2-3 militants in Mishipora village of Kulgam district, a joint operation was launched by police and Army.
As the security forces approached towards the suspected spot, the hiding militants fired upon the security forces, triggering a gunfight.
The militants also threw a grenade at the security forces and manged to flee from the village towards adjacent Kujjar village.
The Kujjar was immediately cordoned off and search operation in the village is going on against the militant group which is believed to be local.
In the meantime, the IGP said that the militants who were killed in Bemina area of Srinagar last night were sent by their handlers from Pakistan to carry out attacks on Amarnath yatra.
He said that it was a group of three militants which included two Pakistan and one local who was also in Pakistan for last few years.
He identified one of them as Abdullah Goujri, resident of Faisalabad Pakistan and Adil Hussain Mir alias Sufian alias Musab, resident of Anantnag of LeT. He said that both of them had fled in Sopore encounter few days back where one of their accomplices, a Pakistani militant was killed.
He said Mir had crossed over to Pakistan in 2018 on visit VISA from Wagah border crossing and returned to Kashmir along with two foreign militants.
Police said that acting on specific information generated by police regarding the movement of militants in Bemina area of Srinagar, police established a special naka near JVC Bemina.
“During naka checking, two suspects while approaching the naka were challenged by the naka party, to which these suspects started indiscriminate firing upon the naka party. The fire was, however, effectively retaliated, leading to a brief encounter in which both of them were killed,” he said.
He said that in the initial exchange of fire, five police personnel received minor injuries who were immediately evacuated to hospital for the treatment of their injuries.
“Incriminating materials, arms and ammunition including two AK-47 rifles, 10 magazines, 165 live cartridges, Y-SMS device, Matrix sheets and Pakistani medicines were recovered from the site of encounter,” he said.
