Militant killed, civilian’s body recovered

SRINAGAR, July 9: Army today killed a militant in an encounter at Khanpora area of Magam, Handwara in North Kashmir’s Kupwara district.
An Army spokesperson said that the militant was killed after search party of Army’s 47 RR intercepted a group of militants at Sangdi Balla, Khanpora near forest area.
After being challenged the group of militants opened fire on the troops triggering an encounter in which one militant was killed. The body along with an AK-47 rifle was recovered and identity and the group affiliation of the militant is being ascertained. The operation to trace out the other members of the group is on.

The slain militant was buried at Reshiwari which is close to the forests in Wader area of Rajwar by members of local Auqaf committee this afternoon. The body was handed over to the locals by police after completing medico-legal formalities.
Meanwhile, an encounter broke out near Line of Control (LoC) in Nowgam sector of Handwara late last night. Army’s 20 Dogra and a group of militants believed to be infiltrators exchanged fire in the area last night. A massive search operation was launched in the morning to trace out the militants.
Four persons were arrested along with drugs and AK rifles in Tanghdar sector of North Kashmir’s Kupwara district today.
A police spokesman said: “Continuing its efforts to weed out drug menace from the society, a special team of Police Station Karnah assisted by 124 battalion of BSF laid a Naka at Sadpora, Karnah.”
The spokesman said that during the checking of two Sumo vehicles bearing Nos. JK 05-A 4359 and JK 09-8135 about 12 kilograms of contraband substance was recovered from the possession of Rafiq Ahmad son of Ghulam Hussain and Zakir Hussain son of Syed Alam, both residents of Nawagabra Karnah.
The spokesman said that while carrying out the search of another vehicle JK09- 8135, two persons were found travelling with AK-56 rifles. Upon their detailed search 2 AK-56 rifles, 2 magazines and AK 56 rounds were recovered from their possession. He identified the duo as Mushtaq Ahmad Malik son of Muzaffar Malik and Shabir Gakhad son of Abdul Rashid, both residents of Hajitarah Karnah.
“All the four persons have been arrested and case FIR No. 45/ 2018 under Section 8/21 NDPS Act, 7/25 Arms Act, 13 ULA has been registered in Police Station Karnah. Further investigations are going on,” he said.
Militants today carried out a series of grenade attacks in South Kashmir’s Tral town However, no loss of life or injury was reported.
Militants this evening hurled a grenade towards Police Post Aripal in Tral area of South Kashmir. The grenade missed the intended target. However, no loss of life or injury was reported. Police fired in air but militants managed to escape.

Body of a 25-year-old youth was recovered in Arwani area of Kulgam district of South Kashmir today. The body of the youth was found by the locals who informed the police.
The deceased has been identified as Tariq Ahmad Mohand son of Ghulam Hassan Mohand of Heff Village, Shopian. A case under relevant Sections of law has been registered and further investigations were taken up.
Meanwhile, Army arrested three youth from Lalpora in Kupwara during checking. They have been handed over to the Police.
The youth have been identified as Asif Ahmad Bhat of Shalgund, Kupwara, Sameer Ahmad Sofi of Lalgund, Pulwama and Ghulam Hassan of Shalgund, Kupwara. One of them Sameer went missing from Pulwama last month.
