UDHAMPUR, July 26: Mid Day Meals workers including men and women engaged for cooking meals in Government Schools today staged protest against Education Department, demanding hike in their remuneration/ wages at Ramnagar today.
Scores of Mid Day Meals workers assembled at Government Model Higher Secondary School, Ramnagar in the morning, where they raised slogans against the department, asking authorities to regularize their services and increase their remuneration.
“We are here to project our issues before media and Administration with regard to hike in wages and regularization,” cook Asha Devi said.
The Mid-day meals workers are getting Rs 1000 per month. They are demanding hike to the tune of Rs 8000 per month or wages as per Minimum Wages act. The protesting cooks said that if that does not happen, then the Government should close down the Mid-day Meal Scheme.
“One cannot do anything with the Rs 1000 that we are getting monthly. Imagine that we have to cook for 40-60 children at every Government school where we are working. We have to cook the meals and then serve the same, that takes a lot of energy and what we are being paid is very meager,” cook Bimla Devi said.
The protesting cooks demanded that the concerned officials should resolve their issues as soon as possible; otherwise, they would be forced to take harsh steps.
