Marginal increase in crime against women cases in J&K, domestic violence up by 58 pc

SRINAGAR, June 7: There has been a marginal increase in crime against women cases during the last eight years in Jammu and Kashmir, where kidnapping and domestic violence has witnessed an upward spiral of over 40 per cent and 58 per cent respectively during the period.
Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti, who also holds the Home portfolio, in a written reply to a question by Naresh Kumar Gupta in the Legislative Council, said that during 2008 to 2016, the crime rate against women has shown marginal increase in respect of certain offences and decreased in some other offences.
“Kidnapping and abduction cases of women has gone up by 40 per cent since 2008. The number of cases related to kidnapping reported in 2008 was 653, against 1097 cases registered in 2015,” the reply said. Domestic violence related cases have also gone up by 58 per cent in 2015 though it has decreased if compared to the previous two years, it said, adding suicide attempts in the last eight years has also gone up by 48 per cent.
Molestation cases have also gone up by around 35 per cent, it said, adding as many as 1340 cases of molestation were reported in 2015, against 869 cases in 2008. Cases related to rape has also witnessed an upward spiral as against 312 reported in 2015, it was 221 in 2008. However, rape cases have witnessed a decline if compared to the last two years.
Eve teasing and dowry death cases have witnessed a decline while dowry restraint and suppression of immoral trafficking of women and girl have also witnessed a downward trend, it said. At present, the overall posted strength of Jammu and Kashmir Police is 74913, the reply said, adding there are 224 Police Stations, including six woman, 11 Railways, two CID, two Crime Branch, one Tourist police stations and seven Anti-Human Trafficking unites, in the State.
Besides, the reply said that there are 288 police posts, which include 20 Railways ad 108 Border Police Posts, in Jammu and Kashmir. “These police stations are actively connected with the investigation of crime,” it said.
The reply further said that no new Administrative Unit has been sanctioned in the Police department since 2014. Police Headquarters (PHQs) have been asked to work out a consolidated proposal for creation of Police Sub-Divisions, Police Stations and Police Posts keeping in view the requirement of the department.
