JAMMU, Dec 30: With no major headway in Government formation in sight, BJP general secretary Ram Madhav today met Governor NN Vohra for more than half an hour and briefed him about the BJP’s attempts to cobble up a Government in Jammu and Kashmir before the deadline of January 19 even as PDP president Mehbooba Mufti, whose party has become single largest in the 12th Assembly will meet the Governor tomorrow morning followed by BJP delegation led by State president Jugal Kishore Sharma, which will call on Vohra on Thursday.
Madhav, who had chaired the BJP Core Group meeting and had dinner meeting with RSS Incharge Jammu and Kashmir Romesh Puppa last night, today had over half an hour long interaction with the Governor at Raj Bhawan here along with Jugal Kishore.
Madhav briefed the Governor about the attempts being made by the BJP to give strong and stable Government to Jammu and Kashmir with the support of regional parties. He reportedly told the Governor that the BJP was holding talks with PDP and National Conference but said the formation of Government could take some time as all political parties have fallen short of number in view of fractured mandate given by the electorates in the Assembly elections.
However, there was no official version from the Raj Bhavan on the breakfast meeting between Governor and the BJP general secretary, who has been looking after the BJP’s efforts to form first ever Government in Jammu and Kashmir.
The meeting comes a day ahead of tomorrow’s crucial meeting of Mehbooba with Vohra.
According to PDP sources, Mehbooba reached here this afternoon and will be meeting the Governor at Raj Bhavan tomorrow morning to apprise him of the PDP stand on Government formation in the State.
Worthwhile to mention that new Government had to be formed in the State on or before January 19 otherwise imposition of Governor’s Rule in the State will become inevitable.
Mehbooba was expected to brief the Governor on steps being taken by the single largest party to form Government in the State and the time it would require to cobble up the coalition. She would return to Srinagar in the afternoon flight.
According to political sources, both PDP and BJP, two largest parties in the State Assembly with 28 and 25 MLAs respectively, will try to gain time from the Governor on their efforts to form next Government in the State as none of the three major parties—PDP, BJP and NC have so far been able to garner the magic figure of 44, required for simple majority in the House of 87, to form the Government.
BJP president Jugal Kishore Sharma along with some of the senior party leaders will meet the Governor at 1 pm on January 1 to apprise them of the efforts being made by the party to form Government in the State.
Party sources said the BJP high command will brief the party leaders before they head for the Raj Bhavan for a meeting with the Governor.
The Governor had invited the PDP and the BJP presidents for talks on Government formation on January 1. However, the PDP had preponed its meeting to December 31.
Meanwhile, speaking to reporters before leaving for New Delhi this afternoon after a meeting with the Governor, Ram Madhav said talks were still on with two political parties on formation of new Government.
“We are still holding talks. There are many issues in formation of stable Government. It can take some time,’’ he said, adding the BJP would try to form the Government before the deadline of January 19 to avert imposition of Governor’s Rule in Jammu and Kashmir.
