LS Speaker regrets observation

NEW DELHI : Despite Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan’s good-will gesture of regretting her observations made yesterday regarding protests in the House by Congress Members, trooping and sloganeering in the Well resurfaced today with the Opposition party Members yet again raising the alleged DDCA scam.
At the onset of the day’s sitting this morning, Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge expressed disappointment over the Speaker’s observations that they (Members protesting in the Well during Question Hour yesterday) do not have national interest in mind.
Mr Kharge said, “Madam Speaker! what you observed about the Congress Members is not good and reasonable..,..You said we have vested interests and do not have national feeling and national interest in mind.., this is not good….we in opposition only try to bring in national interests in the House. We raise issues pertaining to the government and its functioning….We want that the these words be expunged from the records..”
At this, the Speaker said she only stressed on the attitude and approach of the Opposition Members who frequently mob in the Well and raise slogans….”I did not name any one or any party..I don’t think, I must have used words vested interest.., even if it is there those would be expunged….but the Members should also abide by rules and norms..”
Then Mr Kharge again rose to plead for removal of expressions about national feeling and national interests. But the Speaker said, “Now this is too much..,..this attitude is not good”. Parliamentary Affairs Minister M Venkaiah Naidu also opposed the Opposition’s demand but in view of maintaining good will and peace in the House, Ms Mahajan said, “If my words hurt some one, I am sorry..,..I shall expunge them.”
This pacified the Congress Members briefly, as a few minutes later, on being signalled by the leadership, they proceeded to the Well raising slogans to protest against alleged DDCA scam demanding resignation from Finance Minister Arun Jaitley.
This forced the Speaker to take up Question Hour business amid din. (UNI)
