Life-imprisonment to militant for killing informer

JAMMU, Jan 25: Principal Sessions Judge Reasi S R Gandhi has awarded life-imprisonment to a militant namely Mohd Sharief of Thanna Mandi for killing an informer Raja Mohd Iqbal in 2006.
While awarding the sentence, court observed, “menace of terrorism is not restricted to one country and it has become a matter of international concern”, adding “terrorism is one of the manifestations of increased lawlessness and cult of violence”.
“Violence and crime constitute a threat to an established order and are a revolt against a civilized society. Its main objective is to overawe the Government or disturb the harmony of the society or “terrorize” people and the society”, the court said, adding “the circumstances of the case do reveal that it was a cold blooded murder and the victim was suspected to be the informer of security forces and instrumental in the killing of 2 militants at Jhandi Morh”.
“In view of the aggravating and mitigating factors as highlighted by both the parties, court is of the considered opinion that it is not a fit case to impose capital sentence as prayed for by the Public Prosecutor”, Principal Sessions Judge said.
“In the considered opinion of the court, the interest of justice would be sub-served in case the convict is sentenced to imprisonment for life”, the court while awarding life imprisonment to Mohd Sharief, son of Misri  Gujjar of Thanna Mandi.
