REASI, Nov 18: Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Reasi of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology – Jammu, organized campaign on seed treatment in wheat at KVK, Reasi campus, in which large number of farmers from the surrounding villages actively participated.
Dr Banarsi Lal, Scientist & Head of KVK, Reasi gave a detail view of the seed treatment in wheat. He informed the farmers that loose smut of wheat is a destructive disease which badly infects the wheat crop. He elaborated that this disease is caused by a smut fungus called Ustilago tritici, which causes huge loss in the wheat crop leading to great loss to the farmers.
Dr Banarsi told the farmers that this fungus could be controlled by treating the wheat seed with the Carbendazim before sowing. He elaborated the methodology for the seed treatment. He further added that the farmers should sow the disease resistant varieties of wheat and take the consultations from the experts of SKUAST-J.
