Srinagar, Oct 9: Kashmir University is making fortunes by refusing printed study material to the students pursuing B. Ed through distance mode.
The students felt duped by the Varsity as they have paid an amount of Rs 1350 for the study material but have been asked to download it from the university website. “It is clearly written in the fee structure that Rs 1350 is for the study material. Why did they charge money from us when they wanted us to download it online? They are openly looting students in the name of study material,” Aquib Ahmad, a student said.
As per the department, there are 354 students of 2015 batch and 430 students of 2017 batch in district Srinagar enrolled with the Varsity. If the study material is not printed by the Varsity, over Rs 10 lakh will remain unspent in district Srinagar alone.
The students said that at the time of admissions they were asked to pay Rs 28,000 per candidate as fee in two installments and were told the study material would be provided by the Varsity itself but the study material has not been provided to them, despite exams days away.
The students, who are in their 3rd and 4th Semester, said that their final exams are from October 15 and were clearly told by the department to download the material from the website. “Earlier we were told that the study material is being printed and it would be provided soon but now the department clearly told us to download it from the website and hard copies would not be provided. Even the exam dates have been announced but study material is yet to be provided,” Shaziya Jan, a student said, adding, “If they are not printing the hard copies, where is our money then.”
The students alleged that the Director of the department instead of helping is trying to suppress them. “When we approached the Director regarding the issue, he said you have to appear for the examination, else you will be failed. So, it is better for you to download the study material,” they alleged.
Director of Distance Education, Professor Mohi-ud-Din Sangmi said that he has taken the charge of of the department a few days ago and is trying to redress all the problems faced by students. “I have taken the charge of Director a few days ago and within a reasonable time, all the problems faced by the students would be addressed. The department is not printing the study material; it is the Printing and stationery department who are printing it. I will meet the higher officials of the Varsity regarding the issue and see why the study material is not printed,” he said.
