SRINAGAR, June 11: The Kashmir Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) has urged upon the LG Administration to save Carpet Industry of Kashmir which has been on the verge of collapse.
A delegation of KCCI lede by its president, Sheikh Ashiaq Ahmed met the Principal Secretary, Industries and Commerce, J&K UT, Ranjan Parkash Thakur and apprised him of the plight of the people associated with Carpet Industry which is on declining mode. They sought intervention of the Government and revival of this ailing industry of Kashmir.
KCCI president suggested the need for establishment of Model Carpet village and putforth strategies to save 700 years old industry and sought Government’s support in its preservation, promotion and revival at local, national and international level.
Accompanied by Kashmir carpet manufacturers and several trade bodies, KCCI members and others suggested several measures and stated that some suitable land should be identified to raise model carpet village.
The Principal Secretary suggested for initially identifying 200 kanals of land for such a cluster for carpet Industry and also agreed for initiating several measures. He also discussed the issue with the Director Handicrafts and Handloom. Several other suggestion were projected by the delegation and the Principal Secretary assured to take up the same on priority basis.
