JAMMU, Feb 27: Vice-Chancellor, Prof Mohan Paul Singh Ishar today called for stringent measures to combat violence against women, while appreciating the on-going consciousness among youth against this malady.
Speaking at an interactive seminar on “Violence against women” organized by the office of Dean Research Studies, JU in collaboration with the Centre for Women Studies, JU, the Vice Chancellor stressed the need for change in the societal mindset toward women and sought collective effort in installing the sense of confidence and security among them.
Opening the discussion, Prof Rekha Choudhary, Dean Research Studies, JU, said that violence against women persisted everywhere. In the backdrop of the December 16 incident, she said that it was a turning point and resulted in certain amendments in law and passing of sexual harassment Bill. She further said that women are not only sexually exploited but there are other times against women which make them vulnerable in the society.
Earlier welcoming the guests, panelists and students, Prof Poonam Dhawan, Director, the Centre for Women Studies said that the issue requires more comprehensive approach and self-introspection.
Other panelists, who spoke on the occasion, were Prof Kulwant Singh, Prof Lalit Magotra, Prof Abha Chouhan, Prof Satnam Kour, Prof Yash Paul Sharma, Department of Botany, Dr Manju Jamwal, SSP Prisons Rajni Sehgal and Addl SP Crime Anita Sharma.
Director DIQA, Dr Minakshi Kilam; OSD to Vice Chancellor, Jai Kumar Sharma, faculty members and students were also present on the occasion.
