JAMMU, Oct 13: To check the nuisance created by stray dogs, Jammu Municipal Corporation has started a sterilization drive at Municipal Animal Care Centre, Roop Nagar, Jammu.
The drive was started on the directions of Dr Manmohan Singh, Commissioner, JMC and RS Jamwal, Joint Commissioner (A), under the supervision of Dr Jaswant Singh, Municipal Veterinary Officer, JMC.
Giving detail about the programme, Dr Jaswant Singh said that JMC had invited tenders from registered agencies/NGOs to carry out the work of ABC/ARV of stray dogs in all the 71 wards of JMC for a period of 2 years but due to poor response from the agencies/NGOs the programme could not be started and now the JMC has itself decided to take out the sterilization drive of dogs.
He said that under the drive 10-15 stray dogs are being sterilized per day and approximately 50 dogs have been sterilized in last 4-5 days. “Sterilization of dogs is being done by Dr Vikas and his team which includes trained Paravets and dog catchers under the overall supervision of Municipal Veterinary Office, JMC”, he added.
The programme will continue till retendering/outsourcing of ABC programme is done. Municipal Veterinary Officer, JMC said that stray dogs will be lifted on complaint basis and priority will be given to sensitive areas like Hospitals, Educational institutions and religious places, etc.
