J&K’s Nirmal to climb Lhotse, Makalu peaks

JAMMU, Feb 13: Nirmal Kumar, an ace mountaineer of Mountaineering Association of J&K (MAJK) is all set to attempt Lhotse (8516 m) and Makalu (8485 m), the 4th and the 5th highest peaks in the world respectively in the coming spring season.
Nirmal, who has already scaled three death zone peaks including the highest, Mount Everest (8848m); 3rd highest, Kangchenjunga (8586 m) and 8th highest, Manasalu (8163 m) shall start his mission from April 9.
“Nirmal Kumar who had scaled Manasalu peak in just 10 days from base camp to base camp, is confident to summit both Lhotse and Makalu peaks within a month’s time. And, to support Nirmal in his history making quest for mountaineering and to ensure success of his unique expedition, MAJK has tied up with Asian Trekking (P) Ltd of Nepal for all logistics and necessary support during his climb to these formidable death zone peaks,” senior vice president of the Association, Ram Khajuria said.
A native of district Doda, Nirmal Kumar holds the world record of leading the largest successful expedition on Kangchenjunga in 2018. He has got the distinction of scaling eight peaks, including three death zone peaks, and participation in other three expeditions, within just four years of his mountaineering career.
It may also be interesting to mention here that Nirmal Kumar is a holder of Limca Book of Record for having sung the National Anthem at the highest point of the world, the top of Mount Everest. He is also a recipient of State Award in Sports and Rangil Singh Award for outstanding performance in mountaineering presented.
