Jammu runner completes Kargil 10K race barefoot

KARGIL, July 5: Jammu-based endurance runner Anuj Mahajan scripted a unique achievement by becoming the first participant to complete the 10-km race barefoot at the Sarhad Shauryathon 2026 - Kargil International Marathon, organised to honour the heroes of the 1999 Kargil War.

The marathon was hosted by the Indian Army in collaboration with Pune-based NGO Sarhad, bringing together runners from across the country to pay tribute to the courage and sacrifice of the nation's soldiers.

Running barefoot as a mark of respect, Anuj said the effort was not about creating a record but about expressing gratitude to the brave soldiers who fought under extreme conditions during the Kargil War.

"This run was never about setting a record or winning a medal. It was my humble tribute to the brave soldiers of the Indian Army. The discomfort of running barefoot is insignificant compared to the hardships they endured while defending our nation," he said.

Despite the challenging terrain and high-altitude conditions, Anuj successfully completed the 10-km run barefoot. His effort earned appreciation from fellow participants, spectators, organisers and Army personnel for its message of patriotism and resilience. Anuj, who has participated in several endurance events, is currently preparing for a 50-km ultra marathon and aims to complete an Ironman event in the future.
