*After several days, max temp dips below normal

JAMMU, May 24: After days of intense heat and uncomfortable weather conditions, Jammu and several parts of Jammu & Kashmir witnessed much-needed relief today as cloudy skies, cool winds and light showers brought down temperatures across the region.
The sky remained overcast for most of the day in Jammu city, while very light and negligible showers were reported from some areas during the early morning hours. Though the rainfall was minimal, the cloudy weather significantly reduced the harsh impact of the scorching sun and brought down daytime temperatures, offering comfort to people troubled by the prolonged spell of hot weather.

Residents came out of their homes to enjoy the pleasant conditions as the usual oppressive heat eased considerably. Markets and public places witnessed increased movement during the evening hours, with many people describing the weather as a welcome change after several uncomfortable days of intense heat.

Notably, after several days, Jammu recorded a below-normal maximum temperature. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Jammu registered a maximum temperature of 38.1 degrees Celsius on Sunday against the normal temperature of 38.4 degrees Celsius. The city had recorded 40.4 degrees Celsius a day earlier, indicating a noticeable fall in temperature.
Kathua also witnessed a dip in maximum temperature from 40.6 degrees Celsius to 38.7 degrees Celsius, while Katra recorded 31.8 degrees Celsius against 35.6 degrees Celsius a day earlier. The fall in temperatures, combined with cloudy conditions and cool winds, brought considerable relief to residents across the Jammu plains.
Light rainfall and early morning showers were reported from some parts of Jammu division. Banihal received 0.3 mm rainfall, while Doda recorded 3.5 mm rainfall during the past 24 hours. In Kashmir division, Pahalgam and Gulmarg also received light rainfall, adding to the cool weather conditions in the Valley.
Srinagar recorded a maximum temperature of 27 degrees Celsius, while other stations in Kashmir continued to witness pleasant weather under cloudy conditions.
The MeT department has forecast scattered light rain and thunder showers across Jammu and Kashmir during the next 24 hours.
For the subsequent three days, the department has predicted scattered light rain and thunder shower activity on May 25, followed by mainly dry weather conditions on May 26 and 27. However, isolated heatwave conditions are likely to prevail in the plains of Jammu division during the dry spell.
