JAMMU/SRINAGAR, Apr 10: For the first time this year, Jammu and Kashmir today recorded COVID positive cases in four figures at 1005 including 706 in Kashmir and 299 in Jammu besides six COVID fatalities, five of which were reported in Jammu and Samba districts and include a 28-year-old youth.
Another Professor in Jammu University, posted in Chemistry Department, 38 female students of Priyadarshni and Sarojni Naidu hostels and five staff members besides 11 workers and staffers at Kiru project in Kishtwar district were found infected during testing for Coronavirus.
Srinagar and Jammu districts continued to account for maximum cases in both the divisions with 492 and 183 positives. Reasi district in Jammu showed second highest cases in the region at 58 including 39 travelers, majority of whom were tourists who were either sent back from Railway Station or lodged in COVID centres. A 28-year-old youth hailing from Sarore in Samba district, who committed suicide, tested positive for COVID-19 in the Government Medical College (GMC) this evening, Medical Superintendent Dr Dara Singh said, adding that the body has been packed as per COVID protocol for cremation.
Samba district reported another Corona fatality when 78-year-old man from village Dug Channi in Ramgarh tehsil died of ailments and pathogen.
Among three COVID deaths reported in Jammu district, one was a 70-year-old woman from Bathindi while two others were men aged 71 and 91 years old hailing from Gadigarh and Nanak Nagar respectively. They were co-morbid and had tested positive for COVID-19.
Today’s five deaths have taken Corona toll in Jammu region to 752 and that of Jammu district to 391 and Samba to 43. Casualties in other districts include 64 in Doda, 58 Udhampur, 56 Rajouri, 53 Kathua, 26 Poonch, 23 Ramban, 22 Kishtwar and 16 in Reasi district.
For second consecutive day today, 329 Rapid Antigen Tests were conducted in the Jammu University including Priyadarshni and Sarojani Naidu Girls Hostels in which 38 female students and five staff members of the hostels tested positive for the virus. A Professor in Chemistry Department of the Jammu University also tested positive today.
Yesterday, 26 staff members including one female Head of Department and a Professor were found infected in the Jammu University. A total of five Professors have so far tested positive in the University during last five days. Testing will continue on Monday and Tuesday as well.
As many as 164 BSF jawans of one particular battalion stationed at Jaganoo in Udhampur district have tested positive for COVID-19 during past couple of days.
Officials said they had reported back at the battalion headquarters mostly from Maharashtra and Gujarat and were tested for COVID-19 before resumption of duties.
Lt Col Inam Danish Khan, Classified Microbiologist Command Hospital Udhampur, when contacted, confirmed to the Excelsior that 164 BSF jawans have tested positive for Coronavirus and said the number of positive jawans could go up further as many samples were still pending for testing.
“The BSF jawans who have tested positive have been asked to isolate themselves while their contact tracing is on,” he added.
In view of number of COVID cases in Jammu University, District Magistrate Jammu Anshul Garg has declared area in and around University of Jammu falling under the jurisdiction of Gandhi Nagar police station as micro-Containment Zone.
Twelve workers and staff members of Kiru dam project in Kishtwar district have tested positive for the virus, Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Kishtwar Dr Ravinder Manhas said. All of them have been isolated and their contacts are being tested for virus.
Among 299 persons tested positive for COVID-19 in Jammu region today, Jammu district accounted for maximum 183 followed by 58 Reasi, 20 Kathua, 17 Udhampur, 11 Samba, four Ramban and two each in Rajouri, Doda and Poonch districts.
As against 299 positive cases, 102 persons recovered from the virus, 55 of them in Jammu district, 20 Kathua, 15 Udhampur, eight Ramban, three Poonch and one in Rajouri district.
Jammu region’s active caseload today crossed 2000.
The region has a total of 54915 Corona cases. Of them, 2101 are active positive while 52062 have recovered from the virus and there have been 752 casualties.
Meanwhile, Kashmir today reported 706 cases of COVID-19 while two persons died in the Valley.
In view of the continuous spike in COVID-19 cases, the SKIMS administration today announced cancellation of all the sanctioned leave with immediate effect.
“All the sanctioned leave of the staff of SKIMS and its Medical College Bemina (except leave on extra ordinary grounds) are hereby cancelled with immediate effect in view of the surge of COVID-19 Pandemic cases,” read an order by Director SKIMS Dr. A G Ahanger.
“Accordingly, the employees are advised to resume duties immediately for maintenance of essential services. No fresh case of earned/casual leave shall be entertained,” it further added.
Authorities today closed a private coaching educational institute in Srinagar after three of its students were tested COVID-19 positive.
The Srinagar DDMA has ordered suspension of class work at Allen Coaching institute after three students tested positive for COVID-19. It has been closed for 3 days and during this period they have been asked to provide online lessons to the students.
A student from Nishat studying at the institute had tested positive yesterday along with his family. The close contacts of the positive student were tested at the coaching institute today as Medical teams conducted mass testing for proper isolation and quarantine.
In the meantime, the district administration Srinagar today declared two more localities as micro containment zones.
In a tweet, Deputy Commissioner Srinagar, Aijaz Asad, said that Hamdania Colony Rawalpora and Chinkral Mohalla Habbakadal have been declared as micro containment zones.
“2 more localities declared as Micro containment zones in Srinagar. Hamdania Colony Rawalpora, Chinkral Mohalla Habbakadal,” the DC Srinagar tweeted.
Those who tested positive include 492 from Srinagar, 93 Baramulla, 25 Budgam, 31 Pulwama, 14 Kupwara, 32 Anantnag, 5 Bandipora, 3 Ganderbal, 8 Kulgam and 3 from Shopian.
The number of cases in Kashmir division have reached 82,560 including 76,629 recoveries and 1,277 deaths.
The active cases in Jammu and Kashmir are 6,755 including 4,654 from Kashmir division.
With 359 more recoveries, the tally of total recoveries in Jammu and Kashmir has reached 128,691 which is 93.61 percent of the total cases.
