Indian Universities

Sir,
It is sad that India, which used to be the centre of learning in the days of yore and people from across the world would throng Nalanda and Taxila universities in India in quest for knowledge , does not find place in the top 200 universities of the world as per the survey conducted by Times Higher Education World Ranking for the year 2014 -15.Going by the size and population of India,it sounds ridiculous and strange that none of our universities or Institutes of Higher learning has made it to the top two hundred rank whereas 74 American universities figure in the top 200 with seven of them finding place in top ten while UK has 28 universities in top 200 with three of them figuring in top ten.Even other countries such as Germany,Singapore etc have fared much better with 12 and 2 of their universities respectively figuring in top two hundred .The University of Japan has achieved twenty third rank and it has emerged as the best ranked Asian university. However, there is a consolation that two of the Indian universities namely Panjab university and Indian Institute of Science, Banglore figure in top 300 and IIT Mumbai and IIT Roorkee find a place in the top four hundred universities across the world.
The question is where is our Education heading for and what needs to be done to bring it at par with the best education system across the world. That there is something wrong with our education system can be gauged from the fact that we have not been able to produce a Nobel Laureate for the last 84 years after C.V.Raman except Kailash Satyarathy who has been the corecipient of this year’s Nobel Prize for Peace though some Indian born scientists such as Hargovind Khurana, Chandershekhar and economist Amartya Sen who have been working in other countries have made India proud by receiving the coveted Nobel Prize .It is time that the Government appointed a high level committee to pinpoint the drawbacks in our education system and made recommendations for a National Education System to bring it at par with global standards so that our institutes of learning can compete with the best of the universities across the globe.
Yours   etc…..
