Imam arrested on rape charges

SRINAGAR, Nov 1: Imam of a mosque was arrested by police in Qalamabad area of Handwara in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district today for allegedly raping a woman inside a seminary (madrassa) last night.
Sub Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Handwara, Shabir Khan told Excelsior that last night at around 11:30, some people from Qalamabad phoned concerned police station and informed that head of a local Islamic seminary whose name is Maulana Altaf Ahmad Malik, a resident of Trehgam Kupwara, has brought a woman inside his seminary in suspicious condition.

“They suspected some wrongdoing because the seminary is for boys only and when they saw a woman being taken inside, suspicion grew in their minds and they informed police accordingly,” the SDPO said, adding that subsequently, a police team from Qalamabad police station when arrived on the spot found the accused Maulana Altaf Malik and woman in “unacceptable conditions”.
“Later when we started questioning the woman, she said that she had gone to a marriage ceremony and after coming back the accused whom she was knowing well gave her a lift to reach home but he forcibly and by deceit took her inside the seminary and raped her,” the SDPO said, adding that police have arrested the accused and registered a case in this regard.
