Sir,
This has reference to the news item ‘People remove illegal connections in Shiv Nagar’ DE Aug 4.
The action against illegal power connections by a volunteer group in Shiv Nagar, Vijaypur reveals that power theft continues unabated in most of the Jammu province. Though there is shortage of electricity in the city, the situation in the State gets compounded when people steal it.
The Government does not seem interested in improving the situation as there is no action against thieves. Last year, the Power Development Department (PDD) initiated action people who indulged in thefts, but this year no such action is in place. Result? Power consumers who are e-metered pay a heavy price. It is this section who is put to overload checking, is subjected to power fee hike and asked to complete formalities. In case an electronic meter develops a snag, or does not work, the genuine consumer is made to run from pillar to post to get the meter replaced at his own expenses while the thief is free from this procedure. He consumes electricity at will and to his need. Will the PDD make any course correction or people will have to come forward, as they did in Samba to get system streamlined.
Yours etc…
Amrik Singh
