SRINAGAR, Sept 28: High Court today directed the Government to review the whole system of checking vehicles at Lakhapur Toll Post to help the State  become polythene free.
After examining the status report filed by the Government through Advocate General M I Qadri about the polythene checking system, Division Bench of High Court comprising Chief Justice M M Kumar and Justice Muzzafar Hussain Attar directed the Government to review checking system at Lower Munda and Lakhanpur Toll Posts for effective monitoring.
The court also observed that being blessed with natural beauty of water bodies, polythene causes huge damage to natural ecology of the State.
“Therefore, complete mechanism is required so as to regularly check vehicles carrying any kind of banned items including polythene,” the Bench observed.
About the quantity of polythene seized, the report said Doda, Budgam, Pulwama, Kulgam, Bandipora, and Anantnag Deputy Commissioners have recovered huge quantity of polythene.
The court said recovering of polythene implies that huge quantities are being smuggled into the state from Lakhanpur post. The DB directed those Deputy Commissioners who have not filed status to file explanation for their “apathy”, failing which they should appear personally before the court.
The court also ordered that jute, cloth and paper bags shall continue to be in use as they are the effective alternate to polythene carry bags.
“If the Government has any other proposal about other carry bags, the report be produced before the court,” the Bench directed.
