JAMMU, Feb 5: The Government has decided to install two heavy weighing bridges at Chenani near Udhampur on Jammu- Srinagar Highway and at Sunderbani on Jammu -Poonch Highway to check overloading by the goods carriers and plug pilferage of toll tax.
Minister for Transport and Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution (CA&PD), Choudhary Mohammad Ramzan said this at a joint meeting of senior Government functionaries and representatives of Motor Transport Companies Association held here today.
The Minister said that the Government would identify the land in next two months and complete all formalities for the installation of the system. He said these two permanent weighing bridges would be in addition of three mobile weighing bridges purchased last year.
The Transporters Association also extended its full cooperation in meeting the requirements for the installation of weighing bridges.
The Minister said that a three member team of officers from Traffic, Police and Transport Departments would be constituted to identify suitable location for erecting the weighing system on the two roads.
He said that the decision to install heavy weighing bridges has been taken in view of complaints of unauthorized overloading by big trucks, particularly heavy trailers in absence of such a facility in the state. He said that at many occasions overloaded vehicles breakdown in the middle of the roads and block the traffic movement creating problem for the commuters.
Responding to the demand of the transporter representatives, the Minister said that the issue of renewal and issuance of computerized licenses to the drivers of Association would be sympathetically considered. The meeting decided to hold a special trial for the drivers of the Motor Transport Companies Association to facilitate early issuance of the fresh licenses in their favour.
The Minister further said that a team of officers will inspect the Transport Nagar, Narwal and sort out various issues including the parking problems being faced by the truck drivers.
Among others Secretary Transport Shahid Anayatullah, DIG Traffic Shafqat Watali, DIG Jammu Shakeel Beigh, Transport Commissioner, Saurabh Bhagat, Vice Chairman, JDA K.L.Khujaria, MD, JKSRTC J.S.Tondon, RTO Jammu Arvind Kotwal, Director CA&PD Jammu G.S.Chib, Chairman, Motor Transport Companies Association Sudershan Singh Wazir and other bearers of the Association attended the meeting.
