Govt should not reduce soldiers’ strength: Manjit

VIJAYPUR, Mar 6: Former minister and Congress general secretary Manjit Singh today criticized Union Defense Minister Manohar Parikar for his statement regarding reducing strength of defense persons.
“The Defense Minister has given unjustified statement about the decision of not recruiting more soldiers. India’s defense should be strong in view of two main enemy countries like China and Pakistan who invest most in their defense forces and India too, should strengthen its defense and increase strength of defense personnel,”  Manjit Singh said while addressing public at village Koulpur.
Mr Singh while  paying respects to martyred soldier Hawaldar Kulbir Singh, who laid down his life, fighting Pakistani soldiers and terrorists in Kargil war, said that decision of the Union Defence Minister was not good.  Referring to the martyr Kulbir Singh, he said the Union Defense Minister should know that India is safe due to Army and decision to reduce Indian soldiers only because of financial burden is a hurriedly taken step.
“We should keep our army’s strength increasing and invest more in the defense services instead of reducing financial burden,” he said, adding that they can decrease salaries of the Parliamentarians or there are other means to lessen burden.
He said that “our Army not only defends Indian borders but also helps administration to maintain law and order besides helping Government during rescue operations in natural disasters.”
He said that the attempt to reduce number of Indian army would hamper the defense of the country and Government of India should re-think over the decision.
