GMC providing world-class treatment to cardiology patients: UK doctor

JAMMU, Oct 29: Expressing his satisfaction over the infrastructure and technical facilities prevailing at Department of Cardiology, Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu, Dr Simon Thackray an expert in the field of interventional cardiology from Hull and East Yorkshire, England said the patients are receiving world class treatment here.
Talking to reporters along with Dr Sushil K Sharma, Head of the Department of Cardiology, GMC after attending a one day workshop here today, Dr Thackray said the type of patients and type of heart diseases in England and here is almost same and the patients who were examined by him during the workshop have almost the same problem which the patients in UK have.
He said unlike India in UK the care centers are established for coronary heart diseases patients due to which they have not to travel a long distance from their homes to hospitals.
Maintaining that India has progressed a lot, Dr Thackray said there is good standard of technical expertise in India. He said Cardiology Department needs lot of infrastructure and the standard in GMC Cardiology Department is very good.
He said the growing reason for heart diseases in India is smoking and diabetes. In India there are 100 million people suffering from hear diseases and in next 10 years the heart diseases will be a grave problem in the country, he added.
Mr Thackray attended a day -long workshop in the Department of Cardiology related to coronary heart diseases.
Dr S K Sharma said that it is the second workshop being conducted by the department. The workshop is an initiation of activities to keep abreast with the latest international trends in cardiology, he added.
He said the department is equipped with entire infrastructure to provide world -class treatment to patients of the region. Being a teaching institution GMC further helps the doctors to share the knowledge and technologies with international expert. During the workshop many complex PCI cases of coronary and non coronary artery diseases were performed, he added.
Dr Sharma said that coronary artery disease is commonly known as blockage of arteries of heart, which supply blood to the heart muscles. Any obstruction in the blood supply of heart muscles leads to condition known as heart attacks, he added.
He said these heart attacks can be in the form of Angina/ Myocardial Infraction. The common symptoms of such obstruction are chest pain, which is heavy constricting, excessive sweating and difficulty in breathing at rest or during physical exertion, he added.
He said if a person gets any of these symptoms he should immediately consult a doctor and added that today there are techniques to cure most of the blockages without an operation.
Dr Sharma said the branch of cardiology, which deals with such minimally invasive technology is known as interventional cardiology.
