JAMMU, Sept 2: Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu has introduced an advanced Endobronchial Ultrasound (EBUS) facility at its Chest Diseases Hospital, marking the first such facility in Jammu Division and a significant advancement in specialized respiratory and interventional pulmonology services.
The new facility, established under the leadership of Dr Rahul Gupta, Professor and Head, Department of Respiratory Medicine, was launched with the support of Dr Ashutosh Gupta, Principal and Dean, GMC Jammu, and Dr Rakesh Sharma, Medical Superintendent, Chest Diseases Hospital.
As part of the initial rollout, three patients successfully underwent EBUS procedures at the hospital under the expert supervision of Dr Naveed Nazir Shah, Professor, Department of Respiratory Medicine, GMC Srinagar. The procedures were supported by the Departments of Anaesthesia and Pathology, GMC Jammu.
EBUS is a minimally invasive bronchoscopic technique that combines bronchoscopy with real-time ultrasound imaging. It enables precise evaluation and sampling of lesions and lymph nodes located within and adjacent to the airways, particularly in the mediastinal and hilar regions.
The facility has important applications in the diagnosis and staging of lung cancer, tuberculosis, mediastinal lymphadenopathy and other pulmonary and mediastinal diseases. It allows targeted tissue sampling and, in appropriately selected cases, can help patients avoid more invasive surgical procedures.
With the availability of EBUS at GMC Jammu, patients from Jammu Division and adjoining areas will be able to undergo advanced respiratory diagnostic evaluation closer to home, reducing referrals to centres outside the region as well as the burden of travel and invasive procedures.
The initiative also highlights multidisciplinary coordination among the Departments of Respiratory Medicine, Anaesthesia and Pathology in expanding advanced, minimally invasive diagnostic services at GMC Jammu.
