GMC Baramulla performs complex chest surgery

Srinagar, Aug 27: Doctors at Government Medical College (GMC) Baramulla have successfully performed a complex chest surgery on a 60-year-old man from Rafiabad who was suffering from a serious infection that caused pus to collect around his right lung.

The patient was admitted to the Department of General and Minimal Access Surgery after scans confirmed the condition, known medically as empyema.

Officials said that the doctors performed a right-sided mini-thoracotomy, a procedure in which a small opening is made in the chest to reach the affected area.

They also carried out decortication, removing the thick layer of infected tissue around the lung so that it could expand properly.

The surgery was performed under the supervision of Dr Mehmood Rashid by Dr Mir Mushtaq and his team. Dr Waseem Salman and his team provided anaesthesia, with technical support from Abid.

Doctors used single-lung ventilation during the operation, allowing one lung to remain isolated while surgeons worked on the affected side of the chest.

The patient was taken off the breathing machine on the operating table after the surgery and recovered well.
