JAMMU, Dec 11: The Department of Ophthalmology at Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu, headed by Dr Ashok K Sharma, organized a Glaucoma Symposium which was attended by faculty, senior residents and junior residents of not only GMC Jammu but also ASCOMS Hospital.
The symposium was graced by the presence of various guests, including Dr Subash Bhardawaj (Professor and Head, Department of Pathology, GMC Jammu), Ashwini Khajuria (Administrator, GMC Jammu and Associated Hospitals) and Dr Narinder Singh Butyal (Medical Superintendent, GMC Jammu). The external resource faculty speaker for the event was Dr Surinder Kumar Gupta (Professor and Head, Department of Ophthalmology, GMCH Chandigarh).
The event started with the lamp lighting ceremony. The symposium aimed to raise awareness about glaucoma and its various treatment options. Dr Ashok K Sharma discussed about the evolution of Glaucoma giving overview regarding various historical events, the present scenario and what holds for us in the future.
Dr Suresh Kumar Gupta discussed about treating the glaucoma coexisting with cataract with a combination of phacoemulsification and trabeculectomy, glaucoma drainage devices: their modifications and various complications, the quality of the life of glaucoma patients.
The event saw experts in the field come together to discuss the latest advancements in glaucoma diagnosis and treatment.
Dr Bhavya Jad, Senior Resident discussed about how to work up a case of Glaucoma. This was followed by Dr Nalini Birpuri, Senior Resident giving insights about Secondary Glaucoma. Dr Malvika Sharma talked about the usefulness of OCT in managing a case of glaucoma. The medical management of glaucoma and the insight about ocular hypertension and normal tension glaucoma were discussed by Dr Riya Gupta and Dr Nancy Sharma, respectively.
Overall, the Glaucoma Symposium was a great success, bringing together experts in the field to share their knowledge and expertise.
