For the third time in the month of December, the price of non-subsidized LPG cylinder has been hiked to Rs. 1,241, an increase of Rs.220. According to existing rules, a family is allowed maximum of 9 cylinders per year. If the demand is for more than 9 cylinders then the consumers have to pay a higher price. Subsidized cylinder costs Rs. 441 in Delhi though the actual loss to the companies on each subsidized cylinder comes to Rs. 762.70.
Actually the price of LPG is related to the import price and Rupee-Dollar status. Last year the Government was under great pressure and had announced a big hike even in subsidized gas cylinder. But later on the decision was reviewed and a more viable formula was hammered out. Our country is short of energy both gas and crude oil. We have to import both from oil rich Gulf countries. This is the reason that the price of gas has to be regulated every month keeping various factors in sight. We would like that LPG is supplied as a price which ordinary citizen can afford to buy according to his or her need. But perhaps that cannot happen as long as we have not alternate cheap source of energy available to us. As such, prudence demands that we should be economical in the consumption of gas. There are some instructions which gas companies issue from time to time of having energy has to be conserved. These instructions should be adhered to. Unless we have cheap and regular electric power available to us, we will be handicapped in meeting our energy requirements.
