Srinagar, Oct 14: As the unrest entered fourth month in Valley, the unattended roadsides and town squares at South Kashmir’s Pulwama town and some areas of neighbouring Shopian district are strewn with litter piles thereby shrouding the whole area under a foul stink.
Locals said the Municipal authorities haven’t lifted the garbage from last three months which is causing immense problems to the entire populace living in these areas. They said the bus stand Pulwama has been turned into a virtual dumping site while rubbish piles near District Hospital Pulwama are posing health threats and rubbish near police station is a potential security threat.
Similarly, the places near Court Complex Shopian, Hospital Road Shopian and Goal Chowk present a dismal picture, the residents said, adding that the garbage attracts stray dogs and birds that can be seen scavenging for food in the rubbish thereby posing threat to the passersby.
The stray animals which can be seen roaming around these places consume plastic and other harmful substances from these places which cause serious injuries to their intestines and stomach as well.Riyaz Ahmad, a local from Pulwama, said: “No one has come to lift the garbage and the foul smell emanating from the garbage is causing immense problems to people particularly children who are finding it difficult to breath.”
Secretary Municipal Committee, Pulwama, Ghulam Mohammad Dar, while admitting that the garbage was not lifted due to the prevailing situation, said that the ongoing unrest has thwarted the movement of their employees which resulted in the mounting of garbage at collection points.
When asked about the possibility of upliftment of garbage in coming days, he said: “Situation has eased a bit here and within next two days we will try to clean the places and shift the garbage to the recognised dumping sites.”
