Srinagar, Sept 8: The foul smell that emanates from the SMC’s dumping site at Achan along Dr Ali Jan Road has left the residents fuming even as several others are mulling relocation due to the stench which they said has made their life difficult.
The residents said that during the evening hours, the foul smell that emanates from the dumping site makes breathing difficult. “It is not the issue with the residents living near dumping site only, but the people living in areas that are far from the site are also complaining about the same,” Javaid Ahmad, a resident said.
The locals also said that the machinery that has been installed at the dumping site is also defunct even as the segregation machine stationed there is also lying defunct with the result the situation has turned out to be grave.
It is to be noted here that the resident living in Badamwari, Lal Bazar, Qamerwari, Safa Kadal, Soura and Buchpora are also complaining about the same and are stating that they are facing a difficult time due to the foul smell emanating from the dumping site.
In this regard, Imam-e-Hai of Historic Jamia Masjid Syed Ahmed Naqshbandi has also urged the administration to immediately shift the dumping site to some other spot. He said that the stench emanating from the Achhan dumping site has become a menace for the residents of the area.
“Garbage and filth is brought from different parts of Srinagar and dumped there resulting in hardships to the residents,” he said.
He said that the process of dumping the garbage has been going on for forty years while people have been suffering from various diseases due to the stench that engulfs the area in the morning and evening hours
He demanded that the place should be shifted immediately as the SMC has failed in the scientific disposal of garbage. He appealed the Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, other concerned officials, to look into the matter.
When contacted, Chief Sanitation Officer, SMC told Excelsior that will be starting the blooming process at the dumping site which will decrease the foul smell coming out of the site. “There will be a considerable improvement on the ground from tomorrow,” he said.
