First Unani Medical College in J&K

Central Council of Indian Medicine (CCIM), Ministry of Ayush has issued the much awaited Letter Of Intent (LOI) for arranging setting up of the first Government Unani Medical College at Nawabagh Ganderbal, Kashmir. Thus a wait of over 10 years is over and with 60 seats in UG (BUMS) course for the academic year 2020-21, the College is all poised to function shortly. A moment of cheering up by the aspiring students of the UT, indeed.
In order to produce Ayurvedic /Unani Medical graduates in the UT of Jammu and Kashmir, the Government has thus provided the facilities in the UT itself as previously there was no Ayush educational institution in public sector of Jammu and Kashmir, the aspiring students had to go outside the UT to take admission in private colleges. The proposals for setting up of Ayurvedic and Unani medical colleges were sent to the Central Government as back as in 2008 and promptly the sanction was accorded right in the year 2009 but due to lot many issues like construction of building, inspections and other formalities, the matter remained unresolved till now when the LOI is finally issued. Till the staff is recruited locally under the requisite norms, the same is proposed to be provided on deputation basis from other states.
