JAMMU, Dec 29: While holding Army responsible for the ‘death of three civilians’ in Surankote area of Poonch, former Chief Minister and National Conference president, Dr Farooq Abdullah hoped that justice will be delivered to their families soon as assured by Defence Minister, Rajnath Singh during his recent visit to Rajouri.
The former Chief Minister apprehended the potential impact of such incidents on public trust in the system and laid emphasis on the crucial role of public support in overcoming various challenges, specially in the Jammu and Kashmir.
Talking to the media persons during his visit to the hospital at Rajouri today Dr Farooq said, “Our Defence Minister Rajnath Singh had come here. Singh has assured that he will ensure proper probe into it and action will be taken against those responsible for it. We hope action will be taken against them and such incidents would not be repeated,” the former Chief Minister said.
After meeting the injured civilians in hospital today, Abdullah called them victims of terrorism and questioned the circumstances of cross-border infiltration by terrorists,
“They are innocent people. How terrorists have come here? Where have they come from? Why they came here? What can we do, if they come to our houses with guns? They (people) do not have weapons. They don’t have anyone to protect them,” Abdullah said.
Quoting a Lieutenant General, Abdullah emphasized the significance of public support in winning wars.
He reiterated his stance against terrorism, acknowledging the challenges posed by well-trained terrorists targeting officers in the police and Army.
“This should be kept in mind that if the people are with you then you can win the war. Be sympathetic to the people and love them. Terrorists are coming in. They are not being stopped. They are highly trained. They are killing our officers of police and Army,” he added.
Advocating talks with Pakistan as the only way to resolve issues, Farooq expressed hope for renewed dialogue after elections in both the countries. He further quoted Prime Minister Narendra Modi having said that it is the time of dialogue and war is no solution. The NC leader said both India and Pakistan have the Nuclear capabilities and we (People of J&K) will be the major targets. War is no solution and New Delhi must realize this fact.
Abdullah also charged the present ruling regime in Delhi of causing discrimination against other communities excluding the majority community. He said this is dangerous proposition in the secular and democratic country like India. Such a stance of BJP Government will only weaken the country, he asserted.
It is pertinent to mention here that the J&K UT administration has announced compensation and job for the families of the deceased civilians. The Army has ordered a comprehensive internal investigation, pledging full support and cooperation in the inquiry in the civilians’ deaths.
