JAMMU, Oct 23: The irate family members and relatives of infant, who was knocked to death by a speedy mini-bus yesterday at Bagh-e-Bahu, held a protest demonstration demanding arrest of the absconding mini-bus driver. However, Bagh-e-Bahu police arrested the driver this evening from Ware House area near Bikram Chowk and booked him under relevant Sections.
Hundreds of irate residents accompanying the family members and relatives along with the body of the infant assembled outside police station Bagh-e-Bahu and raised slogans against the police for their in-action against mini-bus driver.
Later, the protesters also blocked the road which connects Jammu city with Jammu-Srinagar-Pathankot National Highway for couple of hours, resulting into traffic snarls.
The family members alleged that the police and traffic departments have failed to maintain a check on the mini-buses plying on this route, resulting they drive the vehicles rashly.
“Had the police and traffic departments maintained a vigil on the rashly driven mini-buses plying on this route, this unfortunate incident could have not taken place”, they added.
Later, senior police personnel rushed to the spot and pacified the agitators assuring immediate arrest of the accused. On assurance, the protestors dispersed and vehicular movement was restored.
Meanwhile, the driver of the mini-bus identified as Gurdyal Singh, son of Ravail Singh of Vijaypur, was arrested from Ware House area, near Bikram Chowk by a police party headed by SHO Bagh-e-Bahu Police Station Noor Ahmed under the supervision of SP South and SDPO East SS Samyal.
However, the mini-bus owners plying their vehicles from Muthi to Bawe and Janipur Colony to Bawe kept their vehicles off the road so as to express solitary with the aggrieved family members.
As per reports, 4-year-old Nitish son of Rajesh Kumar and Nenu of Bagh-e-Bahu was returning home after paying obeisance at Bawe Wali Mata temple, when a speedy mini-bus bearing registration number JK02AF-4863 knocked him down, resulting into his on-spot death.
His body was shifted to Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), where after autopsy it was handed over to family members for last rites today.
A case under relevant Sections stands registered at Bagh-e-Bahu Police Station and further investigation into the case is going on.
