TRIPOLI, Nov 25: Delegation of the European Union to Libya on Saturday condemned a deadly terrorist attack on the southeastern town of Tazerbu.
“We condemn Friday’s cowardly terrorist attack against (a) police station and the murder and kidnapping of civilians,” the delegation said in a statement.
“Our condolences to the families of the victims, and sympathy to those injured,” the statement added. “Only through unity can terrorism be defeated.”
The Libyan government on Friday called for unity against terrorism, confirming it will spare no efforts to eliminate terrorism. A military source told Xinhua that dozens of gunmen on armed vehicles carried out separate attacks on Friday evening against a police station and government buildings in Tazerbu, killing eight people and injuring more than 15 others.
The source confirmed that terrorists took dozens of hostages as they withdrew from the area, adding that these attackers were likely Islamic State terrorists who carried out a similar attack last month in the central district of Jufra, some 650 km southeast of Tripoli.
Tazerbu, a small oasis town, is one of the most important groundwater sources for western and central Libyan cities.
