Some Kashmir based political parties, separatist elements and religious organisations have launched a vigorous campaign to defame Village Defence Committees. These elements somehow want to disarm them to fulfill their nefarious designs in Chenab valley.
Village Defence Committee members have played a crucial role in fighting militancy in the area for last 20 years. It is because of these Committees that militancy could not take deep roots in the area. Rather it is VDCs themselves who have suffered much at the hands of militants. They have lost their family members and have become victims themselves. Besides, they do not get much monetary benefits for their services. It is time that Government instead of disbanding VDCs, strengthens them further to keep militancy at bay and maintain pluralistic character of the region.
