Srinagar, June 6: Deputy Chief Minister Dr Nirmal Singh today rejected the reports as rumors, which had suggested that the construction of Sainik Colony is underway at Rangreth on City outskirts and said some people are spreading rumors which have no basis.
He made the statement in the Upper House after legislators from both Congress and National Conference created uproar and sought clearance from the Government minutes after the proceedings of the Legislative Council commenced.
“Let the Government come up with the statement. There is uncertainty among the people and people are worried,” the Opposition members, with Congress MLC Ghulam Nabi Monga leading from the front, demanded. Though the Chairman Anayat Ali tried to persuade the legislators from Opposition but they remained adamant on their demand and demanded Government statement.
The Deputy Chief Minister, who was already present in the House, said nowhere the construction of Sainik Colony is underway. While making the statement, Dr Singh said he fails to understand the motive behind the claim of an organisation (Jammu and Kashmir Coalition of Civil Society) with regard to construction of Sainik Colony.
“Army doesn’t construct any Sainik Colony,” he said in the House. The JKCSS had claimed that the Sainik Colony is being constructed at Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry (JAKLI) Centre. The Deputy Chief Minister said that the Army has right to construct the quarters on its land but they cannot construct colony for retired soldiers.
“This is a rumor aimed to polarise the situation… attempts are being made to set Kashmir on fire,” he said and asserted that no such thing will take place which will harm the interests of Jammu and Kashmir. The Deputy Chief Minister’s statement calmed the tempers of the legislators and the Question Hour followed without any disruption.
Earlier, the Opposition members also raised the issue of killings of policemen by militants and shortage of sugar in the State ahead of holy month of Ramzan. Though the Government made no statement on cop killings but Rural Development Department Minister Abdul Haq Khan assured the House that there would be no shortage of sugar and ration during Ramzan and added that all arrangements are being made.
