JAMMU, Oct 18: Dussehra marking the victory of good over evil was celebrated with traditional religious fervor and gaiety across the Jammu region today.
In this connection, a grand function was organized at Parade Ground here, this evening in which the effigies of demon King Ravana, his brother Kumbkaran and son Meghnath were torched to commemorate the victory of Lord Rama over Ravana and enthroning his brother Vibishna as King of Lanka .

A large number of people drawn form Jammu city and its outskirts had gathered in the Parade Ground to witness the function in which Advisor to Governor, B B Vyas was the chief guest.
The function was organized by Sanatan Dharam Sabha (SDS), Jammu in coordination with Dharmarth Trust J&K.
Effigy of the demon King was set ablaze after performance of traditional pooja archana by Vyas and other dignitaries including the SDS representatives.
In his address, Vyas greeted the people on the occasion of Dussehra and Mahanavmi and highlighted the significance of the day as the triumph of good over evil. He said that corruption is greatest enemy of people in present times and “we have to join hands to fight it out.”
Elaborating on significance of Dussehra, the Advisor said that this festival commemorates victory of good over evil, thus, inspiring proplr to create a better society to live in. He further added that such festivals remind us that those who follow the path of virtue and goodness always emerge victorious.
He expressed the hope that those forces who are behind the present unrest in the State will also vanish and there will be total peace and calm in the State as before. He sought cooperation of all in maintaining peace and tranquility.
Earlier an impressive Shoba Yatra was taken out in the city by SDS and Dharmarth Trust and fully decorated rath (chariot) of Lord Rama was brought from holy Raghunath temple to Parade Ground. The Rath yatra passed from Raghunath Bazar and other markets to Parade ground. Before taking out of the Rath yatra, traditional pooja was performed at Raghunath temple by Trustee Ajatshatru Singh and president of the Trust B R Kundal and other devotees.
A large number of devotees accompanied the Rath yatra which carried Lord Rama, Laxman and Hanumana to Parade Ground along with the ‘Wanar Sena’ (army of monkeys) led by Lord Hanuman, a great devotee of Lord Rama.
The authorities had made elaborate security arrangements at Parade and other parts of the city where from the Rath Yatra passed to avert any untoward incident. A big contingent of police and security forces was deployed right from Ranbireshwar Chowk to Parade to ensure fool proof security of the people attending the function.
Those who spoke on the significance of celebrating Dussehra included president of SDS, Bodh Raj Sharma and its general secretary, Prabhat Singh.
A series of events were held at different places in Jammu region where the effigies of demon King Ravana, his brother Kumbkaran and son Megnath were consigned to flames.
Besides, MLA Jammu East Rajesh Gupta, MLC Ramesh Arora, Principal Secretary, Rohit Kansal, Divisional Commissioner Jammu, Sanjeev Verma, IGP Jammu, S D Jamwal, Deputy Commissioner Jammu, Ramesh Kumar were among the prominent persons present on the occasion.
The Dussehra was celebrated in other parts of Jammu including Gandhi Nagar and Janipur where the Shoba yatras were taken out before setting the effigies of demon King, his brother and son ablaze.
As per reports coming from other districts including Kathua, Samba, Udhampur, Rajouri, Ramban, Reasi and other towns of R S Pura, Bishnah, Vijaypur, Sunderbani, Mendhar etc, Dussehra was celebrated with traditional fervor and gaiety there too with thousands of people witnessing the torching of the effigies of demon King Ravana, Kumbkaran and Meghnath on the occasion.
