JAMMU, July 29: Secretary (Technical), Health & Medical Education Department J&K and former Principal & Dean of Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu, Dr Shashi Sudhan Sharma today clarified that National Medical Commission (NMC) never blamed her for excess intake of MBBS students and linking her transfer with the issue is totally wrong.
“I have not been blamed by the NMC in the matter in anyway. The very fact that the NMC asked me (as the Principal) to investigate the matter and fix accountability of the person(s) vindicates my stand. There were of course some clerical lapse and the lack of communication between the medical college and the local counseling body for which I attended the matter with full responsibility,” Dr Sharma said in a statement.
She said that it was not a mistake with any malafide intention but the mistake occurred while performing the duties with bonafide intention by the dealing hand and as a part of disciplinary action, the erring employee has already been placed under suspension and explanation has been sought from her. To say that the Principal GMC has committed a blunder is totally false and unjustified, she asserted.
Dr Sharma said that she visited the NMC and UG Medical Counselling Committee officers on 01-05-2023 and discussed the issue in detail with them according to whom the issue needs to be dealt by the local counseling body. “As a student friendly principal of GMC Jammu, I pleaded with them not to do any harm to the students who had already joined the course by allowing 4 excess students to continue their MBBS degree with one time relaxation by extending sanctioned strength of MBBS batch 2022 from 180 to 184 although it was none of my fault to admit 184 students instead of 180,” she maintained.
“Linking any transfer with the issue is totally wrong. It has absolutely nothing to do with this issue,” Dr Shashi said, adding, my transfer has been done by the order of Lt Governor without assigning any blame or charge on me.
