NEW DELHI, June 3: On the first full working day of the Modi Government-2, as the different Ministries resumed their routine, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), MoS PMO, Personnel, Public Grievances, Pensions, Atomic Energy and Space, Dr Jitendra Singh announced the release of Rs.11 crore for Northeast students hostel in Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi.
At a meeting of senior officers of the Ministry of DoNER and North Eastern Council (NEC) here today, Dr Jitendra Singh took an update of the progress of various ongoing projects related to Northeast and laid down fixed timeline for completion of each of these projects.
While, to begin with, Rs.11 crore was released through the North Eastern Council for the construction of Northeast students hostel in JNU, the tendering process has been set in motion by the CPWD and Dr Jitendra Singh issued instructions for making the hostel functional, by all means, within next two years.
Pertinent to mention that the first-of-its-kind hostel for Northeast students within the campus of JNU was conceived during the first Ministerial term of Dr Jitendra Singh and the formalities related to acquisition of land and forest clearance were completed before the imposition of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC). The hostel will have 224 rooms with accommodation for 424 students. Out of these, 24 rooms will be assigned exclusively for Divyang students. The remaining rooms will be occupied by equal number of boys and girls. The hostel complex will be constructed in a four-storey building on a land measuring approximately 1.5 acre.
Briefing the media, Dr Jitendra Singh said, he was particularly keen for the hostel within the JNU campus because, there is a huge strength of nearly 1000 students from the eight States of Northeast undergoing studies in various courses at different levels in the JNU.
Dr Jitendra Singh said, with a focus on providing ease of living for the youth and students from the North Eastern region, another piece of land measuring about 5 acres at Rohini area is being acquired from the DDA at a cost of Rs.2.5 crore. This land will be utilized for constructing another hostel which would be devoted exclusively to the Northeast students studying in Delhi University.
