JAMMU, Mar 10: After a high voltage drama following Police detention of student leader Varinder Singh Chib from the campus and subsequent protests by his supporters, the Jammu University authorities constituted a committee to negotiate with the protesting students and scholars.
Headed by Prof Rajni Kant, the four-member committee will negotiate with the protesting students and scholars for looking into their grievance, if any, informed Prof Pankaj Shrivastava, Dean Students Welfare.
Other members of the committee include Prof Prikshit Singh Manhas, Prof Arvind Jasrotia and JU PRO Imran.
Earlier, tension gripped the campus after police whisked away Varinder Singh Chib, chairman of Students Scholars Joint Action Committee (SSJAC) when he was leading a peaceful protest demonstration near the Central Library, this morning.
According to SP South Rahul Malik, the student leader was taken into preventive custody on a complaint made by the University administration. Even as Varinder was released after a few hours, the student leader alleged that he was beaten up by Police during the custody.
Irked over the police action, students and scholars from various departments locked the University main gates and held a strong protest demonstration there demanding immediate release of SSJAC chairman. They raised slogans against the JU administration and Vice-Chancellor Prof M P S Ishar.
One of the protesting students, Ajeet Kumar from Law School, even threatened self immolation after pouring petrol on his body.
Sensing the trouble, Police released the SSJAC chairman and also persuaded the JU administration to negotiate with the protesting students and scholars.
Thereafter, Professor Pankaj Shrivatsava personally approached the protesting students and announced that the administration would constitute a negotiation committee to address their genuine issues.
Pertinent to mention that the SSJAC has been spearheading an agitation against the alleged nepotism in the University and dictatorial policies of JU administration. The protesters are also demanding immediate removal of the incumbent Vice-Chancellor for allegedly encouraging nepotism and favouritism in the varsity.
