KATHUA: Oct 3: A delegation led by Saksham Koushal called on the Principal of Government Medical College (GMC), Kathua, on Saturday and submitted a memorandum highlighting the growing traffic congestion and safety concerns at the hospital’s main gate.

The Principal took note of the issues raised and assured them that the concerns would be addressed on priority.

Speaking to the media, Saksham Koushal said that the upgradation of the hospital to GMC status has resulted in a substantial increase in patient footfall, putting additional pressure on the main entrance. He pointed out that the main gate is located alongside the National Highway, making the area particularly vulnerable to traffic-related risks. Koushal demanded that the second gate of the hospital complex on the city side be opened immediately to facilitate the movement of patients and attendants coming from Kathua city and reduce the pressure on the main gate. He also sought the installation of two convex road mirrors at the approach curves and two speed breakers near the second gate to regulate traffic and help prevent accidents.

He further drew attention to the unauthorized parking and vending activities around the main gate, stating that these have created a bottleneck and frequently obstruct the movement of ambulances and other emergency vehicles. He demanded that the area be cleared and designated as a No Parking and No Vending Zone. The delegation also called for the establishment of a properly designated Bus Stop at a suitable distance from the main gate, so that buses do not halt directly in front of the hospital entrance and further aggravate congestion.

Taking a sarcastic dig at the continued closure of the second gate, Koushal remarked, “When life closes one door, it opens another, but it seems GMC is not willing to open its second gate.” He added that a week should be sufficient to open the second gate and divert traffic from the congested main entrance.
