JAMMU, Oct 9: The Communist Party of India (CPI) has demanded that State Administration must defer upcoming Block Development Council (BDC) elections in the State.
The CPI National secretary Atul Kumar Anjaan, who is also in charge of J&K in a press statement here said that the political scenario in J&K is in turmoil. In the absence of any democratic movement and the arrest of prominent leaders of the state besides detention of a large number of political activists of mainstream parties, itself speaks a very non-conducive atmosphere to hold any sort of elections in the State.
He said CPI was the first national party to inform in writing to J&K Administration that in such a tense political situation in the state, it is not favorable act to hold BDC elections in the state within the frame work of Panchayati Raj system.
CPI leader further said, now the CPIM, Congress, PDP and NC have decided not to participate in elections which is to be held on October 24, under the prevailing conditions in the state.
He appealed to the J&K Administration to defer the elections and asked the Prime Minister and Union Home Minister, why they are adamant to hold elections and convert it into a `mockery’. This act amounts to erosion of democratic values in world’s largest democracy and it will give a very wrong message among the masses not only in the country but outside as well, the CPI leader maintained.
