KOLKATA, June 29: A Barasat court today directed submission of the chromosome pattern report of 2006 Asian Games gold medalist Pinki Pramanik, accused of rape and gender misrepresentation, to determine her sex while extending the athlete’s judicial remand to July 12.
Chief Judicial Magistrate, Barasat, Anita Mathur directed that Pramanik’s blood samples be sent to Hyderabad or Mumbai for the chromosome pattern test, known as karyotyping, to establish the gender of the athlete, whose prayer for bail was rejected.
An official at the state-run SSKM Hospital, where Pramanik’s gender determination tests, excluding the chromosome pattern test, were conducted, said it would require about seven to 10 days to get the results.
“This is a comprehensive test for which we don’t have the facilities. For the results, we have to wait for about 10 days,” the official told PTI.
Pramanik was sent to judicial custody on June 15, a day after the athlete was arrested after being accused of rape and of being ‘male’ by a complainant.
A 30-year-old woman, who had a live-in relationship with the athlete for two years, has accused Pramanik of multiple sexual assault and misrepresentation of gender. (PTI)
