Colombia edge Ghana 1-0 to reach World Cup Round of 16

KANSAS CITY, July 4: Colombia produced a composed display of attacking efficiency and defensive discipline to defeat Ghana 1-0 and advance to the Round of 16 of the FIFA World Cup on Saturday, setting up a clash with Switzerland in the next round.

Jhon Arias scored the only goal of the Round of 32 encounter at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium, finding the net in the 14th minute with a first-time finish that ultimately proved enough to separate the two sides.

Colombia made an aggressive start and looked dangerous throughout the opening half. Kevin Puerta and Luis Diaz both squandered promising opportunities, while Ghana goalkeeper Lawrence Ati Zigi produced an outstanding save to deny Johan Mojica as the South Americans searched for a second goal.

Although Ghana managed to stay within touching distance, they struggled badly in the attacking third. Colombia's well-organised defence gave the Black Stars little space, forcing them into a frustrating evening in which they failed to create any clear-cut chances.

Luis Diaz thought he had doubled Colombia's advantage shortly before the hour mark, only for the goal to be ruled out for a narrow offside. Minutes later, the winger was sent clean through on goal but failed to beat Ati Zigi in a one-on-one situation, keeping Ghana's hopes alive.

Coach Carlos Queiroz introduced Ernest Nuamah, Fatawu Issahaku and Ebenezer Owusu in the second half in an attempt to inject urgency into Ghana's attack, but Colombia remained firmly in control. Fatawu's curling effort that narrowly missed the target was among Ghana's few moments of promise, while goalkeeper Camilo Vargas was rarely called into serious action.

Colombia continued to threaten on the counterattack in the closing stages. Ati Zigi denied Richard Rios with a smart save before pushing away a powerful header from Davinson Sanchez after a Juan Quintero corner to prevent the margin from increasing.

Despite six minutes of stoppage time, Ghana could not find a breakthrough as Colombia comfortably saw out the contest to secure their place in the last 16.

The statistics underlined Colombia's dominance. Nestor Lorenzo's side generated an expected goals (xG) figure of 2.18 compared to Ghana's 0.26, with the African side failing to register a shot on target over the course of the match.

The victory sends Colombia into the Round of 16 for the third time in their World Cup history, where they will face Switzerland in Vancouver. Ghana, meanwhile, bowed out of the tournament once again at the hands of South American opposition.
