Srinagar, Nov 20: Stone-throwing clashes betw-een youth and security forces erupted in Old City after Friday prayers while flags of Islamic State (IS) group, which carried out deadly attacks in French capital last week, were also raised.
Dozens of masked youth assembled outside Central Jamia Masjid in Nowhatta area of Old City and raised slogans and flags of IS. The Islamic State flags were raised by youth despite global condemnation of the outfit in wake of terror attacks in Paris, the capital of France, that left 129 people dead and hundreds wounded.
Police and paramilitary security personnel in a bid to disperse the youth resorted to teargas shelling and fired pepper grenades in the area while the youths retaliated by pelting stones on them. The ensuing clashes continued for several hours and later spread to nearby Rajouri Kadal, Saraf Kadal and Gojwara localities of the Old City.
The stone-throwing clashes between youth and security forces, which have become a routine on every Friday, prompted shopkeepers to close their shops while the traffic was also affected. There was no report of injury to any person in clashes.
