JAMMU, Nov 20: Centre for Studies in Museology & Sheikh-Noor-ud-Din Noorani Museum of Heritage is observing World Heritage Week on November 20-21 by organizing an exhibition ‘Memory of Movement’ and screening of a documentary film – “Ripples of Time”.
Prof Manoj Dhar, Vice-Chancellor, University of Jammu, inaugurated the exhibition and the screening of the documentary. The documentary was a maiden attempt by the Centre to showcase the history and oral narratives of Jammu. Manu Malhotra and Dr Garima Gupta gave their technical and research outputs in the making of the documentary.
Prof Poonam Chaudhary, in her welcome address, briefed the audience about the activities of the Centre and reasons for choosing the theme of the documentary. She said that the documentary film ‘Ripples of Time’ was an attempt to showcase the narratives of the people of Jammu displaced during the Independence of India. She also explained the theme of the exhibition ‘Memory of Movement’ which highlighted the line of partition, migration routes, struggle of the migrated people, war memories and cultural stories of Jammu city. She further stressed that it was the need of the hour to preserve the legacies of the people of the regions which have remained ignored and also creating traditions that will have new meaning for future generation and relevance for an increasingly diverse contemporary audience.
Dr. Garima Gupta, Asstt. Professor, Deptt of English, conducted the power-point presentation of the exhibits and highlighted the importance of intangible cultural heritage and the role of youngsters in documenting as well as in spreading the Intangible Heritage.
The program was witnessed by the children from various schools and colleges of Jammu. As a part of the programme, a workshop on “Techniques of documenting Intangible Heritage” is also being conducted for the students by the Centre for Studies in Museology under the abled guidance of Munish Pandit, Vice President, International Committee on Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICICH-ICOMOS).
Among others, Prof R K Ganjoo, Registrar; Prof Alka Sharma, Prof Satnam Kaur, Sanjeev Mahajan, Dr Neeraj Sharma, Dr Dharmendra Magotra, Munish Pandit, Retd Maj Gen Goverdhan Singh , Col Karan Singh Jamwal, Col Virendra K Sahi, Jahangir Mir and others dignitaries from the civil society were also present on the occasion.
